Frederick Ernest Cutting was born in Honington (Thetford Q2-1895 4B:391), son of Harry and Elizabeth CUTTING (née FITCHES). 1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Mill Road, Honington with his father Harry CUTTING [43] farm labourer; hi smother Elizabeth [40] born Tuddenham; brothers Thomas [15] and Sidney [13] both farm labourers; sister Mary [11]; brothers John [9] and Philip [7]. All except his mother were born in Honington. 1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was still at Mill Road, Honington with his parents and brother Philip (farm labourer). |

Enlisted in Fleetwood, Lancs, with residence Bury St Edmunds.
From the war diary:- LOOS SECTOR 28/5/16..Normal conditions with customary exchange of rifle grenades etc. 29/5/16..Relieved by 8th Royal Irish Fusiliers and we then went into Brigade Support. Battn Headquarters and "C" Coy. being in E.WAY. "B" and "D" Coy in theENCLOSURE and "A" Coy in cellars near SCOTTS ALLEY. 30/5/16 and 31/5/16 The days passed very quietly. During the nights the battalion was employed on working and carrying parties CWGC have 1 killed on 28th, 1 on 29th, 2 on 30th and just Fred on 31st. Fred Cutting's name was originally on the Loos Memorial but seemingly his whereabouts was later discovered, he has an identified grave and his name is no longer on the Loos Memorial. The Bury Free Press of 22nd July 1916 :- HONINGTON SOLDIER WHO SERVED ON TWO FRONTS- As announced in a previous issue, official news has been received at Honington that Prvt Fred Cutting,Royal Irish Fusiliers, was killed in France on 31st May. Prvt Cutting, who was 21 years of age, formerly resided with his sister at 27 Poulton Road, Fleetwood. He joined the colours on 5th September 1914 and was sent to the Dardanelles. He was invalided home suffering from dysentry at the end of August last and returned to France at the beginning of March this year. Previous to joining the Army, Prvt Cutting was employed at the Fleetwood granite works. Two of his brothers are serving, one with the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the other with the R.A.M.C.
